Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary
The Aralam Sanctuary is spread over 55 sq km of undulating forested highlands on the slopes of the Western Ghats. This protected area is located at the south east part of the Kannur district, Kerala. Katti Betta is the uppermost peak of this valley with an altitude of 1145 m above sea level. The Sanctuary is covered with tropical and semi evergreen forests in the Western Ghats. The valley is also enriched with many rivers and streams. It is the home for varied flora and fauna which includes 23 species of mammals, 215 species of birds,20 species of amphibians and 172 species of butterflies.
This northern most wildlife sanctuary of Kerala was established in the year 1984. The sanctuary offers adventurous trekking and camping amenities. The rare animals spotted here are Hanuman Langur, spotted deer, tigers, Malabar giant squirrel, Gaur and Leopards.
Euphorbia Longana, Calophyllum elatum, Cullenia rosayroona, Vellapine (Vateria indica), Strobilanthes, Magnifera indica, Mechilus macrantha, Mesua ferrea, Toona cillata and Myristica Species are the commonly seen species in this ever green forest.
