Thattekkad bird sanctuary is situated at Kothamangalam in the Eranakulam district of Kerala. The major features of the sanctuary are the dense deciduous and tropical evergreen forest and grassland scraps. It is the home for around 500 species of exotic birds. This admired bird sanctuary owes to Dr. Salim Ali, well-known ornithologist. Endangered and rare bird species like the Sunbird, Night Heron, Crimson-throated Barbet, Ceylon Frogmoth Bee eater, Shrike, Black Winged Kite, Falcon, White-Breasted Water Hen, Hornbill, Rose-billed Roller, Grey Jungle Fowl, and Blue-winged Parakeet have been preserved here. The extensive plantations of rosewood mahagony and teak are seen in this area.
