Palakkad

Palakkad district located at the foot of Western Ghats made it a fascinating destination of tourists. Palakkad has indeed a unique character and traits that not many destinations can match. Palakkad is well known for its vast expanses of paddy fields and palm trees, traditional Ayurvedic treatment centres, the thick tropical jungles, culture and history. Palakkad is often known as the granary of Kerala because of its vast tracts of paddy fields. The district offers diverse tourist attractions which include wild life sanctuaries like silent valley park, Attapady hills and Parambikulam, beautiful dams like malampuzha, pothundi, siruvani and mangalam. Palakkad contains a vast expanse of verdant plains interspersed with hills, forests, rivers, mountains and streams. Palakkad is situated at the foot of the Western Ghats with a 40 kilometre break in the mountains known as the Palakkad Gap. This pass acts as a corridor between Kerala and Tamil Nadu and played a major role in the trade contacts between east and west coasts of peninsular India.

The name Palakkad is derived from the Malayalam words Pala (Alsteria scholaris) and Kadu (forest). The areas of this district were once a beautiful stretch of forest covered with the sweet-scented flowers of the Pala tree. The region of Palakkad follows a mixed culture of both Tamil and Kerala. There is some finest Carnatic musicians hail from this region which continues to be a largely agrarian society. Palakkad is a dreamy land of misty monuments with its ever green tropical forests, wild life sanctuaries, rare birds and animals, dams, rivers, places of worship, historical monuments and traditional Ayurvedic treatment centres. Palakkad lying at the foot of the Western Ghats has a tremendous scope and immense potential to become one of the best tourist destinations of the country. Palakkad is the most picturesque district of Kerala with rich diversity in flora and fauna. The district is gifted with the beauty of virgin and verdant Nelliampathy hills, the famous Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, Attappady hills, the precious and unique Silent Valley National Park, and more than half a dozen dams.
