The Muthanga wildlife sanctuary located at the Wayanad district of Kerala, is adjacent to the protected region of the Nagarhole National Park and the Bandipur Tiger Reserve in nearby Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
The 345 sq km wide sanctuary is rich in both fauna and flora. It comes under the Elephant Project to preserve them. Elephants and tigers in groups are sighted often in this area. The elephant ride arranged by the forestry department is the best way to explore the sanctuary. Reptiles, butterflies, monkeys, Gaur, tigers, bears, and leopards are some of the other commonly seen animals in the sanctuary.
The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1973, is adjacent to the protected area set of connections of Mudumalai of Tamil Nadu on the southeast and Bandipur and Nagarhole of Karnataka on the northeast. The sanctuary is a vital part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve established with the key objective of preserving the biological heritage of the country. The sanctuary is rich in diverse fauna and flora. Sanctuary gives emphasis on the scientific conservation with due consideration for the general existence of the tribals and others who lives around the forest.
Situated on the north-east of the Palakkad district and spread over 827 sq km, Attappady is one of the bulkiest tribal settlements in the State. The concerto of forests, rivers and mountains here is highly remarkable. Tribals like the Mudugas and the Irulas live here, though their density of population is low. They are worshippers of the mountain peak ‘Malleeswaran’ as a huge ‘Siva-linga’.
