The historic Santa Cruz Basilica church was built by the Portuguese monarch and eminent to a Cathedral by Pope Paul IV in the year 1558. Later in 1795, it came to the hands of the British power when they took over Kochi, and was destroyed. About a hundred years later, in 1887 Bishop Dom Gomez Ferreira commissioned a new edifice at the same site. The church was declared a Basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1984.
