Kozhikode being the capital of the powerful Zamorins is the most important region of Malabar and also a prominent center of trade and commerce. The district of Kozhikode found a place in the History with the discovery of Sea Route to India by the Portuguese Navigator Vasco Da Gama in the year 1498. Vasco Da Gama first landed at the Kappad sea shore where a monument is constructed here to commemorate the historical landing. Kozhikode district is enclosed on the east by Wayanad district, on the west by the Arabian Sea, on the north by Kannur district and on the south by Malappuram district. The coast of Kozhikode have prominent role in the Indian Ocean trade in silk, spices, and other goods for over two decades. Kozhikode had emerged as the centre of an independent kingdom by the 14th century. Kozhikode experiences a humid climate with a very hot season extending from March to May. The region receives heavy rain during the South – West Monsoon which sets in the first week of June and extends up to September. The district also receives North-East Monsoon which extends from the second half of October to November. Kozhikode receives an average annual rainfall of 3266 mm. Practically, no rain is received during December to March and the temperature gradually increases from October onwards to reach the maximum in May. The district is having a wide costal area leading to a very high humidity in those areas.
Wayanad
Wayanad is nestled among the mountains of the Western Ghats, forming the border for the greener part of Kerala. The land is filled with history and culture along with clean, pristine, enchanting and hypnotizing nature. Wayanad hill station is full of plantations, forests and wildlife. The region forms a vast land mass for the wild life in the most natural abode with the hills adjacent to Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu and Bandhipur in Karnataka. Wayanad district stands on the southernmost tip of the Deccan plateau and its chief splendor is the majestic Western Ghats with haughty ridges and rugged terrain interspersed with deep valleys, dense forest and tangled jungles. Wayanad also enjoys a strategic locality as the leading tourist centers of South India like Ooty, Mysore, Bangalore, Coorg and Kannur around this region. Wayanad enjoys a salubrious cool climate throughout the year with a mean average rain fall of 2322 m.m. Lakkidi, Vythiri and Meppadi receives highest rainfall in Wayanad where the annual rain fall ranges from 3,000 to 4,000m.m. Winds of high velocity are familiar during the south west monsoon and dry winds blow in March-April. The high altitude regions of the district experiences severe cold. The mean maximum and minimum temperature at Ambalavayal in Wayanad for the last five years were 29oC and 18oC respectively. These regions experience a relative high humidity which goes even up to 95 percent during the south west monsoon period.
Kannur
Kannur is the northernmost district of Kerala holding immense tradition and natural beauty. The district was known as Cannanore during the reign of British. The name Kannur is assumed to be derived from the name of the Hindu diety, Kannan (Lord Krishnan). The word literally means the place of Lord Krishna in Malayalam. The district is beautifully landscaped with Western Ghats in the east and Lakshadweep Sea in the west. Kannur is bounded by a wealth of natural beauty with many mesmerizing tourist destinations. The district is blessed with historical monuments, serene beaches, religious centers, rivers, natural hill stations and beautiful valleys. Kannur shares many natural splendors of the state along with the cultural, political, religious and industrial heritage. Kanuur is well known for the cradle of many colorful folk arts and folk music of the state. Kannur is prominent for the best handlooms with international reputation. The traditional culture and art is well promoted in the district of Kannur. The folk arts, folk plays, and Theyyam are the most prominent ones.
