Trivandrum
Trivandrum currently known as Thiruvananthapuram is a southern most district of Kerala holding a number of tourist spots. The state capital has a variety of destinations such as hill stations, beaches, lagoons, wild life sanctuaries and many more reflecting the beauty of the state. Tourists flock to Thiruvananthapuram mainly for Medical tourism with more than hundred recognized Ayurveda centers and resorts in and around the city. The popularity of Ayurveda rejuvenation treatment is the major driving factor of tourists towards the state capital. The city of Thiruvananthapuram built on seven hills, had grown into a most sedate and big cities of the State by retaining the past glory and charm. Thiruvananthapuram is blessed with a pleasant climate virtually throughout the year but it glorifies in the monsoon rain.
Kovalam
Kovalam, the seashore front has made into the international tourism map, is just 16 km from the capital of the state, Thiruvananthapuram. The Arabian Sea lines Kerala along its west all along turns into a meek and serene waterscape at Kovalam. The major attraction is the sandy seashore naturally separated by rocky mounds into three distinct curved seashores. Clear water with shallow bottom up to a hundred meters has made Kovalam a swimmers’ haven. It is also listed first in Kerala to be featured on the International tourism map in a big way. Nowadays, tourism lore treats Kovalam seashore as made of three small seashores differently named. The seashore is divided into three sections by rocky headlands jutting out in to the sea at two places. They are named Light House Seashore, Hawah Seashore or (Eves Seashore) and Samudra Seashore. The first two seashores lying southwards are tourist spots. The curved shape of seashores makes them a sort of coves with shallow water extending up to a hundred meters. This naturally protects from strong waves and deceptive undercurrents make it safe for swimming. The clear water source resembles the blue sky. Both the Light House Seashore and the Hawah Seashore have a large number of resorts and hotels. This small seaside town sees much business aimed chiefly at foreign tourists. There are plenty of curio shops selling things from all parts of the country. The north of the seaside, known as Samudra Seashore in tourist idiom, lies quietly separated by a high headland from the busy locale. It is still under developed and the local fishermen continue to venture into the sea on the traditional sea faring device (catamaran) which is just a few logs of light wood tied together.
Kanyakumari
Kanyakumari is a very unique destination of India in the state of Tamil Nadu with the Arabian Sea in the west and the Bay of Bengal in the east mingle with the Indian Ocean. Cape comerin or Kanyakumari is located in the southernmost tip of the country, where the three seas get united. The spectacular sunrise and sunset of Kanyakumari made it a popular destination of India. The unique sunrise and sunset and the serene beauty of Kanyakumari attract lots of tourists round the year. Kanyakumari is one of the unique destinations of the world where both the sunrise and sunset can be observed from the same point. The sunset is visible only from October 15 to March 15 in a year; whereas the sunrise can be viewed from this southernmost tip throughout the year. Murugan Kundram is atop a hill atKanyakumari which gives a magnificent view of both sunrise and sunset throughout the year. This spot offers a great panoramic view of the entire Kanyakumari. On full moon days both the sunset and moonrise can be seen almost simultaneously from the same spot. This unique spectacle is witnessed at Kanyakumari.
Alleppey
Alleppey is a quaint town in the Alappuzha district of Kerala with pristine backwaters flanked by palm trees hence fondly called as “Venice of the East”. The interconnected waterways of Alleppey form part of the 900km of navigable backwaters of Kerala. Alleppey is enchanting and receptive to tourists all round the year for the thickly punctuated coconut palms, Chinese nets and paddy fields. The destination provides an exact insight into the backwaters of Kerala with a glimpse into the life of the country folk. The maze of interconnecting waterways and channels of Alleppey or Alappuzha as it is known in local language truly depicts its name. Alleppey is considered to be the oldest planned town in this region; being one of the most important tourist centers of the state with the sun-kissed beaches, the bustling shores and canals and the timeless coves.
Thekkady
Thekkady located at the Iddukki district of Kerala is the largest wildlife sanctuary of the country. The sanctuary covers an area of 777sqkm with an artificial lake surrounding it. A boat cruise along the lake gives a most panoramic and serene experience. It is the only Tiger reserve of the country. It is also known for its dense deciduous, evergreen forests and grasslands. It is the home for many types of flora and fauna. Elephants, tigers, Nilgiri Langurs, gaur and lion tailed Macaques are the commonly seen animals. The sanctuary can be accessed either through boat or jeep or by walk.
Munnar
This beautiful hill station is noted for its cool climate and vast tea plantations. This little town boasts of many tea factories, wildlife sanctuaries, colonial bungalows and lakes. Literally meaning 3 rivers, Munnar is situated on the confluence of three rivers – Nallathanni,Mudrapuzha and Kundala. This hill station is 1600m above sea level and was once the summer resort of erstwhile British Government in South India. Among the exotic flora found in the forests and grasslands here is the Neelakurinji (scientifically known as Strobilantus kuntianus). This flower bathes the hills in blue every twelve years will bloom next in 2006 AD. Munnar also has the uppermost peak in South India, Anamudi hill, which towers over 2695 m. Accommodation amenities are outstanding. The altitude is 4000 feet.
Guruvayoor
Guruvayoor is the most sacred and important pilgrim centre of Kerala. The Sree Krishna temple, the abode of Lord Sree Guruvayoorappan, is situated 29 kms north west to the cultural capital of Kerala. Guruvayoor is a thriving township in the Trichur district of Kerala state in the South of India. The locale is actually a narrow coastline strip of land on the south western edge of Indian subcontinent and is one of the 10 paradises in the world. The scenic beauty and serenity of the land attracts lots of devotees to this center every year. The chief deity Guruvayoorappan, hears the prayers of its pilgrims. The eastern nada is the main entrance to the shrine.It is believed that the temple is the conception of Guru, the preceptor of the Gods, and Vayu, the God of winds. Within the Chuttambalam or outer enclosure of the temple is the tall gold plated Dwajasthambamof 33.5 m high. A 7 m high Dipastambham (pillar of lamps) inside the temple has thirteen circular receptacles that provide a truly gorgeous spectacle when lit. TheSreekovil of the temple is square shaped where the sacred sanctum of the temple houses the main deity. The temple also contains the images of Lord Ayyappa, Ganapathy, and Edathedattu Kavil Bhagavathy inside the edifice. Non-Hindus are not allowed to enter inside this temple.
